2-D modelling: Early sketches to explore initial ideas: Often, just half an hour with pen and paper can determine what might (or might not) work and highlight the main issues needing to be overcome...
In this example: very little time was needed to explore the main issues and design requirements to take a sailboat gantry/davit system to the next stage of development. |
3-D Modelling & Prototyping: This could be 3-D Solid modelling, 3-D card mock-ups or more accurate models (functioning or non-functioning) or rapid prototypes to assess form, function and fit of a component, system or assembly. Alternatively one-off custom parts can be produced in some cases where only one production item is needed.
One-off Custom Stainless steel Mast Collar produced (ready for welding above and finished & fitted below) to take lines aft on a 36 foot Pilothouse sailboat. This could quite easily have been a fully-functional working prototype for a longer production run.
